When to Visit for the Best Experience
The British Museum welcomes around 6.5 million visitors annually, making it one of the most popular attractions in London. Here are the best strategies for avoiding crowds:
Best time of day: Arrive right at opening (10:00) to enjoy the galleries before the midday rush. Alternatively, visit in the late afternoon from 15:00 onwards when many tour groups have departed and the galleries thin out considerably.
Best evening: Friday evenings are the hidden gem — selected galleries remain open until 20:30, and the atmosphere is wonderfully calm with far fewer visitors than during the day. It's arguably the best time to see the most popular exhibits.
Best season: The quietest months are January, February, and November. The shoulder months of March and October also offer manageable crowds. The peak season runs from June to August when school holidays coincide with the tourist high season.
Days to avoid: Weekends, especially Saturdays, are the busiest. School holidays (half-terms, Easter, summer) bring significantly more families. Rainy days tend to be busier as visitors seek indoor activities.
Pro tip: Weekday mornings (Tuesday to Thursday) are consistently the quietest times. If you can visit mid-week in the off-season, you may have entire galleries nearly to yourself.
